How Local AI Summary Works

Unlike cloud-based AI tools, this feature uses Google's Gemini Nano: a small language model that runs entirely inside Chrome. Your document text is processed on your device, ensuring complete privacy.

Requirements:

  • ✓Chrome on a Computer. Chrome 138 or later on Windows 10 or 11, macOS 13 or later, Linux or a Chromebook Plus, with a graphics card of more than 4 GB, or 16 GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores. Chrome on phones does not have it yet.
  • ✓One-Time Download. Chrome downloads its Gemini Nano model the first time and keeps it for later. It asks for at least 22 GB of free disk space for it, and removes the model again if free space falls under 10 GB.
  • ✓Text-Based PDFs. The document must contain selectable text (not scanned images), in a language Chrome's summarizer reads: English, Spanish, Japanese, German or French.

Our Approach:

For longer documents, the text is split into manageable chunks and each section is summarized individually. The chunk summaries are then combined into a unified final summary: all happening locally on your device.
